Rescue treatments are effective in controlling soil cutworms. Treatment: Generally, a post-emergence "rescue" treatment should be considered if cutting is observed on 3-5% or more of plants and the worms are one inch or less in length. If you suspect pressure in any of your fields please contact your local Delong Company Representative. Larvae can be found by carefully moving the soil around a damaged plant. You can calculate your percentage of damage based on the number of effected plants divided by the number of plants you scouted. Examine 50 corn plants in five areas of your field for wilting, leaf discoloration and damage, or plants that are missing or cut. Concentrate your scouting to fields that may have had growing cover crops or any type of growing vegetation. Corn should be scouted weekly until the corn reaches V5. We are encouraging you start looking for any activity during early season stand assessment. The black cutworm causes the most damage in early growth stages of corn after weeds or cover crops have been eliminated from the field. The resent storm fronts that have worked in from the South have intensified the moth counts and potential damage to our area fields. Early indications from the Wisconsin Pest Bulletin are showing high moth counts in Southern Wisconsin.
